We have a Feedback Loop setup with AOL, and we are normally able to resolve a false positive in 7 to 14 days. First, if you are inadvertently labeled as a spam IP address, AIT’s abuse team can request the whitelist from AOL’s Postmaster website. There are only a few ways to correct the problem. Due to the issue with AOL’s “This is spam” button, AIT’s abuse team then must sift through the problem to determine which customers may be sending spam email and which ones are being inadvertently labeled as spammers because of an email alias to their email account. AOL’s systems will block IP addresses that have legitimate spam, and AIT sometimes may get complaints (called a Feedback Loop) about IP addresses in the AIT network that are spamming AOL users. AOL incorrectly identifies the source of the email as the AIT email server by noting the IP address, and this blocks your forwarded email from being received at your AOL address. If you receive spam from and that email goes through your AIT hosting account as an email alias and is forwarded to your email address, when you click that “This is spam” button, you are essentially telling AOL to block your AIT email server’s IP address. Basically, because your email is forwarded, the last IP address to touch your mail is your hosting plan’s IP address.
The problem with using this button when you have email forwarding set up is that AOL’s spam system fails to identify the proper source of the email. If you are an AOL subscriber and have your email address, you know that there is a “This is spam” button in the AOL web mail interface.
Why email forwarding a problem with AOL?Įmail forwarding is normally handled the same by every provider, but AOL is an exception. In the SMT 6, WHM, and Plesk solutions we offer on all of our web hosting, VPS and dedicated server plans, there is an option for email forwarding. Here is what you need to know (and why).Īlmost every hosting company out there allows their customers to forward or alias their email to another email account such as, aol.com,, etc. Who likes spam? But, there are times where an ISP’s spam-related procedures may cause issues with YOUR email. In most cases, this is done for a good reason.
